Why Aren't We Changing? Benefits of Digital Transformation in Life Sciences Manufacturing

Jan 4, 2022

Digital transformation has become an important strategy for organizations to mainly provide flexibility, improve efficiency and productivity, and reach operational excellence. But, why change? What are the compelling reasons to start now and no later? And, What actual benefits can you expect when implementing a successful digital transformation strategy?

Hello there, dear reader...

You probably came here expecting to acquire a bit of knowledge or perspective about the benefits of smart manufacturing. If not, maybe what drove you here was an impulse of just mere curiosity about the future of manufacturing or manufacturing trends in 2022  ...Right?

At this point, we have all probably heard about the benefits of digital transformation in Medical Device, Diagnostics, and Biotech manufacturing and the implementation of Industry 4.0 strategies. There has been much discussion over the past decade about this specific topic, and this is clearly reflected in the couple of hundred blog entries on the internet whose narrative is very much similar to one another and are very much complete in their information, some adding interesting and relevant findings to the already broad subject.

Many systems and solutions prize themselves on enabling access to these benefits that include: real-time data collection (leading to data-driven decision processes), increasing productivity, quality of products and profitability enabled by a high ROI and improving flexibility of processes and thus, reaching operational efficiency and effectiveness of manufacturing processes.  The benefit list goes on and on, but, overall, in very similar lines.  T

here is not a shortage of experts' advice about the pressing need to start creating and implementing digital transformation strategies, especially in biotech and medical device manufacturing industries as, due to their nature, function in highly regulated and competitive environments and need to continuously improve quality, innovate and remain compliant.

The question lies in the fact that, if there are so many obvious benefits to this, mostly related to cutting down direct costs of poor quality that are related to remediation, fixing of external-internal quality failures and compliance-related costs, and the fact that 95% of manufacturing leaders agree that digital transformation is essential for future success, then why are some organizations considering, yet not implementing any type of connected manufacturing strategies or Industry 4.0 related solutions; and why among those organizations taking real action, 70% of those don’t actually reach their intended goals.

Maybe, there is still plenty of room for discussion...right?

I must agree with the theory that organizations fail in digital transformation due to their reactive approach towards challenges instead of transversally aligning with other departments siloed from one another. Strategically, aligning different goals and visions across the organization and proactively researching, evaluating and implementing a joint digital strategy could potentially achieve more meaningful results for all.

I must speculate, but will say that there is also an underlying lack of "the Art of the Possibilities" within an industry that is too afraid to fail in what may seem a very much expensive endeavor and is too traditional in its ways to change their reactive approach and reimagine the possibilities of how their organizations could improve their overall operations and their reputation in the industry, all while facilitating innovation.

What can you do?

We know this journey might be a bit daunting as we have served biotech and medical device manufacturers for 30 years to create and implement successful connected manufacturing strategies and solutions that align with their needs and vision. That is why we thought hosting a series of webinars with Siemens Digital Industries Software, inviting experts on the subject who can help you and your team explore ideas and perceptions, change and share visions, and help you to create a compelling vision of all the possibilities when implementing a successful digital transformation strategy in manufacturing.

To book an introductory conversation with our team expert to explore how we could help your organization to have a successful digital transformation strategy in manufacturing send us an email to maria.giraldo@seabrookglobal.com, we would be happy to help you.
